ABOUT THE COMPETITION
The Sodwana Shootout is the premier South African national underwater photographic competition that takes place over 3 days each year and attracts underwater photographers and videographers from across Southern Africa. It is a unique competition where entrants enter footage and images taken exclusively during the 3 days of the competition at Sodwana Bay.

The competition recognizes competitors at  various skill levels from novice through to advanced and even professional entrants. There are incredible prizes for the various techniques and categories as well as for the overall winner. A panel of respected industry professionals is responsible for the judging of the entries. Typically the Sodwana Shootout attracts an extensive list of sponsors and prizes. Keep visiting to watch the list grow!

The competition is concluded with a prestigious and well attended prize giving event displaying the winning images and video footage.

CONSERVATION
We have adopted the Conservation Rules established by EPIC. Marine life should never be stressed or endangered for the sake of a photo or video clip. Conservation rules will apply to all entries and decisions will be final. Entries suspected of exhibiting the following behaviour will be disqualified:
  • Divers visibly damaging the environment
  • Animals with signs of stress
  • Animals moved to an unnatural environment or risky location
  • Animals being fed
  • Marine life being touched
  • Diver exhibiting poor buoyancy control
All competitors are asked to watch the “Hands Off The Reef’’ video, hosted on YouTube.

Last year we launched a new conservation initiative where we had independent observers observe divers underwater for any misconduct. All entrants had to wear a luminous disc with their entrant number on it as to be easily identified by the observers. This year we will once again work with SANBI on this initiative.

Merit will be given to entries that depict recognition with the iSimangaliso World Heritage Values, these include
  • Superlative scenic beauty
  • Sense of Place
  • Exceptional biodiverstiy
  • Ecological processes
  • Diverse eco-systems

Simangaliso Sodwana Shootout and Festival poised to be best ever!
